Ok heres a list of the many ideas & suggestions Si & I have been logging, take a look & e can talk more on Saturday....

• where the wild things are

just wanted to float this idea while it's in my head...
watched 'where the wild things are' on dvd the other nite, and being a huge fan of the book, i was a little bit concerned that it might not live up to the source material...
but it was great, i loved it. and it struck me that actually it's a story all about 'dreams of home' really.

so a) it'd be a great thing to have on the film programme next year.
and b) as there's a strong VA/lit crossover with the picture book, maybe we could do something in the hub related to it.
designing and making wild things, dressing up as wild things...
maybe the stage could be set up as max's bedroom and, over the course of the weekend, transform as per the book until "the ceiling's hung with vines and the wall become the world all around..."

•Taking a look at the site ( http://www.kennardphillipps.com/category/commissions ) it strikes me this is the kind of thing where it would be good to commission them to create a piece for the culmination of the just Peace Campaign in 2011.

• Wanted to pick your brains a bit... Friend of mine at the Barbican suggested this http://www.barbican.org.uk/theatre/event-detail.asp?ID=9963 for GB. Its all about community, and is well up GB's street. I don't think its that much as tickets to it at the Barbican are only £3 tops, and it might be brilliant at the festival...maybe even somewhere near the campsite?
What do you reckon? Do you think we could do it? Where could we put it?

Also look at the stuff they have done, would love to comission something printed & bound......


• Willie Williams is pretty much on for bringing lumia domestica, we just need to follow it up with him again.

• Sharon Caton Rose has offered to curate an exhibition of artists from the north 'angels of the north' a mixed exhibition of painting & sculpture - she can explain more on saturday.

• I've said yes to a photographer working in the congo for a banner exhibition & can design it ( it was a trust GB application). I don't think we have ever made the most of these exhibitions. For all my pleas for a better set up & lighting even this year it was left till last thin Friday before they put up the heras fencing & then even though I warned them it needed to be sturdy it blew over & ripped my banner in 2. However I still feel with better planning & lighting this is a good way to exhibit the more justice based photo exhibitions we get offered.

• We've talked about replacing the greenhaus with a scriptorium as it's the 200th anniversary of the king James bible, so we might produce a gb gospel during the festival & could tie this in with an exhibition to do with scriptures....

• Also been talking to Stephen Raw about a participatory lettering type project that lots of people could get involved with. And Jay ( peace cranes ) Gadhia is interested in coming again, we have done hands on projects a couple of years running before moving on so a variation on peace cranes may be something to look at.

• Could do street Art again, but might be time to rest that for a bit

• Xavier Pick couldnt make this year by was interested in 2011

• Unazia Karim, twho did some workshops this year would love to come & do more

• Si Smith has been doing a project all year where he is documenting every bus journey he does with a print which would make a nice exhibition linking to the home theme.

• Photoflashswap was a big success this year - double the entries, it was filmed so you will be able to see the rush & the exhibiton boards nearly falling over !

• Wooly thinking went really well, would be nice to develop that with sarah dean

rob pepper and aimie littler...

...are signed up to begin work at this year's festival on a 'long now' piece to be exhibited in 2011 :-)

where the wild things are...

for 2011, how about turning the hub into the bedroom of max from 'where the wild things are' [the book version]
then across the weekend we can transform it as per the book into the land where the wild things are...
we can run a load of wild-thing-themed things in there [eg monster-making stuff] and there are good potential links to be made there with literature ben's programme and film, and it fits the as-yet-unannounced festival theme really well too...

oliver east...

...again thinking of 2011 and the theme, oliver east might be a good fit.
he did the artwork for the last elbow album [seldom seen kid] and produces these little comic-book travelogues and memorials little daily journeys and stuff.

he's produced loads of volumes of his work in the 'trains are... mint!' series, and just had a show entitled 'berlin and that' [with a book to accompany it]

jon mcnaught

i just bought this beautiful little book [from nobrow press] by jon mcnaught and thought it'd fit next year's theme beautifully...

paper cinema

i went and saw the paper cinema in leeds last night and it was a wonderful piece of live art/performance/film/music...

hundreds of beautifully drawn pen and ink puppets and bits of scenery manipulated live in front of a little camera with the results projected up as the puppeteers and audience watched.

they re-told conan doyle's 'the lost world', it was about 50 mins long and it was spellbinding... [think the end credits to 'a series of unfortunate events' meets oliver postgate/peter firmin]

the youtube clip above is of a poe tale that they do, but you lose a lot of the effect by not being able to see them performing it [which for me, was half the joy of the thing...]

Exhibiting A Stunning Art Installation about Jesus

..........Thanks for the reply. I can give you my web-site which has a lot of my paintings on it - most have Christian themes. The cube installation is still at the design stage, and will be ready to be seen in plan form in a few weeks, I guess. It'll be free-standing, and measure 2x2x2metres. As it's cost is £8K at the moment, I am trying to pursue a way of making it more affordable to build, then will be loaning it out to people/organisations for events I hope. This is early days! So it's not on the web-site yet. I think it could be good in a place where people are trying to understand what the cross is about/atonement or where there is a talk on contemporary prophetic art??? Street Child World Cup

Proposal from Momentum Arts :

We’re currently running a programme called the Street Child World Cup, which aims to use the spotlight created by South Africa hosting the World Cup as a platform for street children to have their voices heard. In March 2010 teams of street children from eight countries around the world will come together inDurban, South Africa to play a football tournament and use their voice to make change happen. One of the outcomes of this programme will be an art exhibition, produced by the street children in collaboration with an internationally trained team of artists.

We’d like to apply to have this exhibition displayed at the 2010 festival. I hope it fits with the ethos of the festival; the Street Child World Cup aims to give a voice to marginalised children, and raise awareness of these issues around the world. I’d be really grateful if you could let us know the application procedure, and really hope that we’ll be able to deliver an exciting and creative exhibition.

hello

i've just got bck from an alumni event at the royal college of art, where xavier pick gave a talk about his work as a artist in residence with the M-O-D in Iraq.
Fascinating.
when he was studying at the rca he drove an ambulance to bosnia over the christmas vacation, and he spent time in beruit documenting the situation there in the 90's.

he spoke about being an artist, not a journalist, and the differences, the way people respond to them, and their differing aims.

He spoke about being a peace artist, about being aware that he was commissioned by the army, and being sensitive to this, but having the desire to speak the truth of the place through his drawings.
of the humanity he saw, in the british soldiers, the iraqi border guards, and civilians.

he spoke of his heritage (from york with lebanese roots) his judeo christian back ground, and his Buddhist meditative practice. he mentioned his faith impacted his outlook and what he wanted to convey and how it was how he coped with the difficult conditions in iraq.

he was an eloquent speaker, and his drawings were startling fresh and rich.

he spoke of justice. faith. and art.

i spoke to him afterwards, and said that the issues he had been speaking of resonated with those of greenbelt,
and that i particularly thought they were pertinent to the 'art of looking sideways' theme.

the idea of conveying a situation, but not giving the answers,

to provide questions
not answers

we didn't talk expansively, but he said that he'd be up for talking about his experience.
